Where to see the northern lights for free in Rovaniemi

📍Arktikum
The park next to Arktikum is one of the darkest spots that you’ll find within a short walking distance of central Rovaniemi. There are no streetlights in the park itself though you will still have some light pollution from the opposite side of the river and surrounding areas.
📍Ounasvaara Observation Tower
Just on the other side of Rovaniemi’s main bridge (Jätkänkynttilä) you will find Ounasvaara Observation Tower. This is a wooden viewing tower which gives you a panoramic view of Rovaniemi and hopefully some northern lights to go with it!
Please note that there is a limited amount of space in the tower itself so it can fill up quickly. There can be some light pollution here but you’ll have a clear view north on the top of the tower where you will be able to see the northern lights.
📍Olkkajärvi Rest Stop
A quick 20 minute drive out of town will get you to Olkkajärvi which is a popular spot to watch the northern lights. Here you’ll have less light pollution than in town.
